Case Study
The refurbishment of the Blackwall Tunnel involved the replacement of the original outdated and inadequate ventilation system.
The replacement scheme required the installation of four 8.5m diameter automatic ventilators.
Each ventilator was powered by four 1250mm diameter extract fans and the ventilator blades so large they each had to be linked to a geared system powered by large 3 phase motors. The automatic ventilators are believed to be the largest “AOV’s ever built.
Type of system
4 x powered extract turrets for pollution & smoke ventilation
Special features
All controls by Advanced Smoke Group and each turret has its own independent control panel and field wiring.
Equipment installed
4 number x 8.50m diameter circular turrets, each with six individually motorized “petal” blades which operate sequentially.
The turret blades power open upon a fire or carbon monoxide signal from the tunnel monitoring system.
